Compass

$200.00

Inspired by the extraordinary journey of the Mayflower and the navigational world of the early 17th century, Compass brings together the symbolism of the compass, the sea and the ship that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic.

The compass sits at the heart of the piece — a symbol of direction, uncertainty and the determination to reach somewhere that existed only on a map. Beneath it, the Mayflower moves across the Atlantic, carrying its passengers towards an unknown horizon.

Created in Mike Hicks’ distinctive historical style, the artwork combines nautical imagery, traditional decorative elements and the atmosphere of an old engraved chart to tell a story that is centuries old, but still remarkably familiar.

A journey. A destination. A new horizon.

Every piece in the collection is produced as a limited edition and individually serialised, giving each artwork its own place within the story.

The Story Behind The Artwork

In 1620, the Mayflower left England carrying a group of passengers towards a destination that was little more than an idea on a map.

They had no certainty about what awaited them.

What they did have was a ship, a course to follow and the determination to keep going.

Compass takes that idea of navigation as its starting point.

The compass represents more than simply finding a direction. It represents choice, uncertainty and the need to keep moving when the destination is still beyond the horizon.

The Mayflower beneath it becomes part of that story — a small ship crossing an enormous ocean, carrying people towards a future they could not yet see.

Mike Hicks has combined these historical references with ornate nautical decoration to create an artwork that deliberately feels as though it could have been lifted from an old maritime chart or illustrated historical document.

But this isn't intended to be a literal reconstruction of a map.

It is an interpretation of the idea of the journey.

  • The uncertainty.
  • The courage.
  • The distance.

And the moment when a person looks towards the horizon and decides to sail anyway.
